The H5 series was introduced in 2016 as JR Hokkaido's first Shinkansen.
Based on JR East's E5 series, some interior and exterior changes have been made.
The basic appearance and paint color are similar to the E5 series, but they are wrapped in a lavender colored stripe called "Saika Purple", and the symbol of Hokkaido and a gyrfalcon motif is featured on the sides of five cars in the train.
Like the E5 series, it is currently in service on the Hayabusa service running between Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.

The power unit equipped with a coreless motor enables stable running. Two cars, No. 3 and No. 7, are equipped with motor cars.
Head/tail lights are on (white LEDs used). Car No. 10 (H514-1) has a switch to turn the lights off.
