[About the actual machine]
The A-12 Avenger II is a new attack aircraft that was developed in response to the ATA program, an advanced technology attack aircraft program proposed by the U.S. Navy in 1983.
It was planned as a carrier-based attack aircraft that sought to further evolve the stealth technology that had first been put into practical use with the F-117 Nighthawk, and to achieve even higher levels of stealth.
The aircraft's main feature was its triangular planform and its design as a complete flying wing without any tail fins.
In addition, the wingtips were equipped with a folding mechanism in consideration of their use as a carrier-based aircraft.
All armament was stored in a weapons bay, which was designed to accommodate a variety of weapons depending on the mission.
Due to rising costs and a post-Cold War mood toward arms control, the development plan was completely canceled in 1991 by then-Secretary of Defense Cheney.
The actual aircraft never took to the skies.
