In 1988, in conjunction with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel connecting Honshu and Hokkaido, the sleeper express Hokutosei began operating between Ueno and Sapporo.

This product is a mixed train consisting of carriages belonging to JR Hokkaido and JR East that was introduced in 2008. Cars 1 to 6, which include the lobby and private B-class sleeping cars, are JR Hokkaido cars, while cars 7 to 11, which are mainly the dining car (Grand Chariot) and private A-class sleeping cars, as well as the power car, are JR East cars.
It continued to operate as one of the few overnight sleeper express trains, but due to preparations for the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen, regular service ended in March 2015, and it was subsequently converted into a special train and operated until August of the same year.
