[About the actual machine]
The Saab AJ37 Viggen is a fighter jet developed in Sweden and operated from 1971 to 2005.
Development began in 1961 as a successor to the Draken.
The first flight was successful in 1967, and deployment and operation began in 1971.
The aircraft is equipped with canards on both sides of the cockpit and has delta wings.
The aircraft is equipped with one Pratt & Whitney JT8D-22 engine.
It boasted a maximum speed of Mach 2.1 and STOL performance, allowing it to take off and land on short runways.
It was fitted with a 30mm Oerlikon KCA cannon as a fixed armament, and was also capable of carrying RB71 Skyflash short-range air-to-air missiles.
A total of over 300 aircraft were produced.
In 2000, the 2nd and 3rd Squadrons of the 16th Wing were closed and reorganized into a single squadron, and a commemorative painted aircraft was produced.
The Viggen, painted in the No. 2 Squadron's solid blue livery, was unveiled at the Uppsala Air Show in 2001, marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Air Force.
