[Completely new mold]
The Type 74 is a domestically produced main battle tank that was standardized in 1974 as the successor to the Type 61.
The low profile and equipped with a 105mm rifled gun, combined with hydropneumatic suspension, allowed the vehicle to maintain a horizontal stance even on rough terrain, making it effective for firing from hilly and other ridgeline terrain.
While its successor, the Type 90 tank, was deployed mainly in Hokkaido, 873 Type 74 tanks were deployed nationwide.
After nearly 50 years of service, this vehicle was gradually replaced by the Type 10 tank and Type 16 mobile combat vehicle, and all vehicles were retired at the end of March 2024.
