Model of the latest deployment, the Air Self-Defense Force's F-35B

[About the actual machine]
The F-35B, which began deployment to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in August 2025, is a fighter jet capable of vertical landing in STOVL mode.
This new fifth-generation stealth fighter was born from the US Joint Strike Fighter program and employs cutting-edge high-tech systems and materials, giving it high stealth capabilities.
The F-35 is unique in that it is made from a single basic design into three types tailored to different applications: the F-35A for conventional takeoff and landing, the F-35B for short takeoff and vertical landing, and the F-35C for aircraft carrier deployment.
Among them, the custom-built F-35B was developed for the United States Marine Corps and is being deployed as a successor to the Harrier.
The aircraft is equipped with one Pratt & Whitney F135 turbofan engine.
The F-35B is characterized by the use of a shaft-driven lift fan system to ensure V/STOL capability, combined with an exhaust nozzle that deflects thrust downward.
Its first flight was successful in 2008 and it began operations in 2015.
The Air Self-Defense Force also installs them on its Izumo-class destroyers, providing effective air defense for Japan.
