Product Description
Introducing a completely new 1/144 scale injection plastic kit of the Italian Navy Delfino Submarine (1890) from Micromill of Ukraine.
Delfino (meaning dolphin) was the Italian Navy's first submarine, laid down in 1889, launched the following year, and completed in 1892.
Commissioned into the Italian Navy in 1895, the ship was steered by two vertical rudders at the stern and one at the bow, as well as two horizontal rudders at the stern and bow.
It also had two vertical-axis propellers for vertical movement through the water, but these were said to have had little effect.
For these reasons, it is believed that Delfino was more of a test ship than a practical warship.
Between 1902 and 1904, improvements were made to the ship, including the replacement of its engine with a 130hp gasoline engine for surface cruising, which increased its maximum surface speed to 10kt and its range to 306km.
At the outbreak of World War I, the ship made 44 patrols in the Adriatic Sea and was also used as a training ship.
After the war, Delfino was placed in reserve and struck from the Navy register in 1919.
The kit comes with etched parts and a display stand.
When completed, the total length will be approximately 167mm.
