Product Description
The T28 heavy tank (also known as the T95 tank destroyer) was a prototype heavy tank without a turret designed by the United States during World War II.
The decision to develop this vehicle was made in 1943, and it was given the designation T28 in 1944. It had the firepower to destroy the German heavy tanks and tank destroyers deployed in the fortified lines built in Europe.
The T28, which had no rotating turret and had a sealed fixed fighting compartment, was renamed the T95 tank destroyer in 1945.
The two T28s (T95s) that were produced were tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Fort Knox until 1947.
The greatest feature of this vehicle is the inner/outer double-track running gear and tracks, which were designed to reduce ground pressure in order to support a combat weight of nearly 90 tons. The outer running gear could be removed along with the side skirts, and the outer running gear could be removed when transporting by rail or running on paved roads.
The removed outer left and right running gear were designed to be combined with the side skirts on the inside and towed to the rear of the vehicle.
The T28 was the only assault gun-type fighting vehicle in the US Army, but development was cancelled in October 1947 due to operational limitations imposed by the vehicle's low mobility and weight, as well as the priority being given to the T29 heavy tank, which had been under development since 1944.
One of the two prototypes is on display at the Patton Tank Museum at Fort Knox.
