The Keio 3000 series is a train for the Inokashira Line that was introduced in 1962.
The body was made entirely of stainless steel, which was rare at the time, and had an innovative structure with FRP (reinforced plastic) attached to the front end.
The front of the train is a different color for each train set, with a total of seven colors, and they are affectionately known as "rainbow colors."
The first and second trains had a body length of 18m, single-doors and a body width of 2744mm, but from the third train onwards the body length was changed to 18.5m, double-doors and a body width of 2844mm.
Since it was manufactured over a long period of time, there were changes in specifications along the way and it comes in a variety of forms.
Vehicles manufactured from 1983 onwards have had their body structure changed and the number of corrugated sides reduced.
Renovation work was carried out on later-manufactured vehicles starting in 1996, with the front end replaced (and panoramic windows installed), two-tone side stripes added, through doors and ladders installed on some of the end panels, and the interior updated.
In later years, the pantograph was replaced with a single-arm type, the air conditioner was replaced, and other changes were made, but the train was retired in 2011.
As of 2026, some of the trains have been transferred to local private railways and are still in use.
