The vehicle was later transferred to Nagaoka Depot and used in the Niigata area, but around 1986 it was transferred back to Makuhari Depot and used to transport newspapers and other cargo in the Boso area, remaining in service on the main line until 1996.
Since then, they have been used as shunting vehicles at various depots, and KuMoUni 143-3 remains in use today as a training vehicle.
