The An-72 is a twin-engine short take-off and landing jet transport aircraft developed by the Soviet Antonov Design Bureau (now ANTK Antonov of Ukraine).
Its NATO codename is [Kola], and in Russia, it's affectionately called [Cheburashka] because, when viewed from the front, its engines resemble large ears.
To improve STOL performance, this aircraft utilizes the Coanda effect by mounting its engines on the upper surface of the wings.
The An-74TK-300, which made its maiden flight in 2001, was developed as a civilian transport aircraft, so operational costs and flight speed were prioritized over STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capabilities, and therefore the engines were mounted on pylons under the wings.
