The Class 9600 steam locomotive was a full-fledged, domestically produced, standard-design steam locomotive, with a large number of 770 units manufactured between 1913 and 1926. Its 1D axle arrangement (without trailing wheels), thick boiler, and small driving wheels give it a distinctive appearance. Another characteristic of this type is the unusual phase of the driving wheels, with the left wheel leading by 90 degrees. It was active throughout Japan, primarily on freight trains, and its high performance led to it becoming the last steam locomotive of the Japanese National Railways in 1976.
