- The 13-inch coastal mortar was the largest artillery of the Union Army (North Army) at the time and was used to defend forts and beaches.
- One of them is called [Dictator] and it was used in the Siege of Petersburg.
- The gun was mounted on a specially reinforced flat wagon and is said to have fired a 220 lb (about 100 kg) shell up to 4235 yards (about 4 km).
- A total of 218 shots are said to have been fired during this 1864 siege.
