[Actual vehicle introduction]
- Traditionally, logistics was supported by freight trains operated by the Japanese National Railways, but container transport was introduced in the late 1950s as a new method to replace the inefficient car-loaded freight trains.
- With a transportation unit of one container, high-performance container-specific freight cars can be used for high-speed transportation, and the flexibility of being able to easily collect and deliver by truck to remote locations far from rail tracks has brought a breath of fresh air to freight transportation.
- The first container-only freight cars manufactured in 1959 were the deckless Chiki 5000 and the decked Chiki 5500 (later renamed from "Chiki" to "KoKi"), which could carry five small Class 1 containers.
- The car body was a different color from conventional freight cars, and it could run at a maximum speed of 85km/h.

- The KoKi 5000 was fitted with a deck in the 1960s and incorporated into the KoKi 5500.
- The KoKi 5500 was manufactured until 1970, but shortly after the introduction of larger second-class containers along with its successor, the KoKi 50000, the KoKi 5500 was also modified to carry four second-class containers, but the body remained the same.
- From 1988 to 1989, the KoKi 45500 series had its braking equipment modified so that it could run at the same top speed of 95km/h as the KoKi 50000.
- 218 cars were converted from the latest batch of KoKi 5500 series cars fitted with TR216A bogies.
- It has a thin blue stripe on the side for identification purposes.
