[Actual vehicle introduction]
- In 1990, the 485 series [Sylphid] was introduced at the Niigata branch as an event vehicle that could be used by small groups as well as large groups.
- In consideration of operation on non-electrified sections, a diesel generator was installed on Kuro 484-1 and a dedicated diesel locomotive [DE10 1701] with matching paint was prepared.
- They were used for towing locomotives on non-electrified sections such as the Ban'etsu West Line, and even after the retirement of the 485 series Sylfide in June 2001, the DE10s remained in Sylfide colors and were used to tow the NO.DO.KA, a modified 485 series Sylfide, and passenger Joyful Trains, but were retired in 2004 and transferred to another company.
