── Opening up the border between Yamagata and Niigata prefectures! The Yonesaka Line's helper DD14-317

[Actual vehicle introduction]
This work was previously carried out using the Ki900, the steam-driven rotary snowplows Ki600 and Ki620, and a locomotive (known as the Kimaroki formation). However, this required a lot of manpower, was slow, and the vehicles were becoming increasingly old. As a result, the DD14 diesel locomotive was developed to replace all of these vehicles at once.
- Based on the DD13 type locomotive used for shunting and small-scale operations, the driver's cab is located at the front of the vehicle and it is equipped with a rotary head at the front that combines a snow scraper and a rotary snow removal device.
- It is equipped with two engines, each of which can be used for driving and snow removal, or both can be used for snow removal.
- In this case it must be pushed by another locomotive.
- In the summer, the rotary head could be removed, allowing it to perform shunting operations and train towing in the same manner as the DD13.
- During the long production period from 1960 to 1979, the engine power was increased and the rotary head was modified, resulting in many variations.
- JR East inherited 20 DD14s, of which DD14-317 was assigned to the Nagaoka Depot and was mainly used on the Yonesaka Line, backed by DE10s.
- In the early 2000s, there are records of it being used for snow removal in combination with a DE10-1701 painted in Sylfide livery.
