- In 1962, when the "Dream Super Express" planned to run between Tokyo and Osaka, which had been called the "Bullet Train" since before the war, was starting to take shape, the Japanese National Railways manufactured six high-speed prototype cars, numbered 1000 series, to conduct field tests and collect data on various equipment necessary for stable commercial operation at speeds exceeding 200km/h, which were unprecedented in the world.
- The two-car formation consisting of cars 1001 and 1002 is commonly known as the "A formation," and the four-car formation consisting of cars 1003 to 1006 is commonly known as the "B formation." Tests were also conducted in which the two were coupled together to form a six-car formation, and passing tests were also conducted using the two together.
- The shape of the front end, with its streamlined "bulb nose," had been largely refined through wind tunnel testing using a model, but many problems were discovered when the prototype was actually run, and subtle changes to the shape of the 1000 series can be seen compared to when it was first completed.
- What is particularly striking is that the original pantographs were diamond-shaped with no cross section at the bottom.
- The body paint of the A-set featured a large ivory area and a thin blue stripe on the side panel and bottom, giving it a very different look from later mass-produced cars.
- Two months after completion, the A-unit was converted into an electrical test car equipped with an inspection dome to check the condition of the overhead lines, and then in 1964, before the line opened, it was converted into a rescue car, the 941-type. When it was retired in 1975 without having been used much, it was used to test the car body dismantling equipment, and truly completed its life as a test car.
