[Actual vehicle guide]
- The Kiha 40 series is a general-purpose diesel car developed by the Japanese National Railways in 1977. There are various serial numbers, but the Kiha 40 series was manufactured for Hokkaido with a double cab.
- The Kiha 40-100 series was designed for extremely cold regions, with small side windows that could be turned into double-glazed windows with high thermal insulation by lowering the interior glass.
- The 100-series Kiha 40 cars that were converted to one-man operation are classified as the 700-series, and their exteriors are changed to light gray with green and blue stripes. However, in order to accommodate further use from 2003, they underwent life-extension work, such as engine renewal and moving the water tank inside the car, and the number of cars that underwent this work was increased by 1000 to the 1700-series.
- In 2010, three Kiha 40 cars belonging to the Kushiro branch were repainted in the metropolitan area colors, and of these, No. 1749 and No. 1758 kept their metropolitan area colors even after the typhoon was removed and they were transferred to Asahikawa, attracting attention along with two cars painted in cream and vermilion JNR colors.
- In 2019, the "Northern Reprint 40 (Yonmaru) Request" campaign was held, and as a result of voting, Asahikawa-affiliated No. 1747 was given the Soya Line express livery, which was previously worn by the Kiha 400 series, which was a modified version of the Kiha 40 and 48 models. In addition to general use, it is also used for events, tourist trains between Asahikawa and Wakkanai, and the express train "Hanatabi Souya".

- The car number and inspection notation can be selected from either 1749 or 1758 on the transfer sheet, and the common capacity notation and D cock notation are printed
- The display frame on the through door on both ends is printed in silver, and by using the included etching parts, it is possible to reproduce a more detailed appearance.
