[Actual vehicle guide]
- The Kiha 40 series is a general-purpose diesel car developed by the Japanese National Railways as a successor to the Kiha 10 series diesel cars, which were becoming obsolete at the time, and was introduced in 1977.
- Unlike conventional diesel cars, the car had a wide, tapered body, and featured a high driver's cab similar to the Kiha 66 and 67 models, with through doors and a frontal shape with a difference in height between the top and bottom of the front window, improving comfort and safety.
- For vehicles with both driver's cabs and one-sided driver's cabs that can be operated individually, various number generation classifications have been created, such as specifications to suit the climate of each region and the presence or absence of toilets.
- The Kiha 47 series is a vehicle with a single driver's cab and double doors. The 0 series has toilets for warm climates, while the 1000 series has toilets without. Initially, the train was painted in a vermilion color known as the metropolitan color.
- Local diesel cars, including the Kiha 40 series belonging to the Hiroshima branch, were gradually changed to yellow with cream and gray stripes from the 1990s, and are commonly referred to as "Hiroshima color."
- With single-cab cars, Kiha 47 cars are coupled back-to-back, or with double-cab Kiha 40 2000 series cars, and Hiroshima-colored cars are mainly used on the Kabe Line, Sanyo Line, and the west side of the Sanin Main Line, and are still in service today, being updated.

- Minimum radius of R490 can be passed (excluding S-shaped lines)
