In the early 1990s, JR Hokkaido found itself faced with the need to counter increasing competition from other routes, such as the extension of expressways and the popularization of air routes.
The Kiha 281 series is a new generation of express diesel railcar developed in 1992 as a trump card for shortening travel times on the lucrative Hakodate-Sapporo route.
Thanks to the pendulum system based on JR Shikoku's 2000 series and the two 355 horsepower high-output engines installed in each car, it is possible to run at a maximum speed of 130 km/h, maintaining the highest possible speed even on curved sections.
Three prototypes and 24 mass-produced cars were manufactured, and the train began operating as the Super Hokuto express train in 1994.
This train covers the same distance in 2 hours and 59 minutes, 30 minutes faster than before, beating out the many other express trains around the country and taking the title of fastest scheduled train in Japan.
When the service first began, the lead car, Kiha 281, had the [HEAT281] logo painted under the driver's cab as an accent.
Since then, the windows have been reinforced with polycarbonate panels, the logo has been changed, and the direction signs have been converted to LED, but the train has continued to shoulder the heavy responsibility of connecting Hakodate and Sapporo.
Due to aging, it will be retired in 2022, and Kiha 281-901 is preserved at Naebo Works.
