As part of the 400th anniversary of Japan-Netherlands relations in 2000, MR501 was newly manufactured by Niigata Iron Works in 1999 as the lottery ticket for the Japan Lottery Association.
In 2022, the train was renovated, its nickname was changed from Lottery to Retron, and the interior carpeting was also updated.
