When Kansai International Airport opened in September 1994, the Nankai 50000 series express train, the Rapi:t, was introduced for airport access.
It debuted with an unprecedented and bold design, including a unique shape reminiscent of an aircraft, such as a front shape resembling a three-dimensional curved sphere, oval side windows, and a deep Rapi:t Blue (blue mica) body paint job. Even now, more than 30 years later, it remains one of the most popular railway cars in Japan.
Of the six cars in the train, the two cars heading towards Namba have a 1+2 seating arrangement called "Super Seats," and car No. 3 has a baggage compartment for transporting checked baggage.
The main controller uses GTO-VVVF inverter control, and with a top speed of 120km/h, the train covers the distance between Namba and Kansai Airport in as little as 29 minutes.
