Hamakaze was commissioned in June 1941 as the 13th ship of the Kagero-class destroyer.
During the Battle of Cape Bouno in April 1945 during Operation Ten-Ichi-Go, the ship was heavily damaged and sunk after being attacked by aircraft from the US Navy's carrier-based task force.
The survivors were rescued by Fuyutsuki, Hatsufrost and Yukikaze.
