The Kumoha 40 series was a double-cab electric train that appeared in 1932 and was the Ministry of Railways' first 20m-class electric car.
When they first appeared, they were used on the Chuo Line, Yamanote Line, Joban Line, and Joto Line (now part of the Osaka Loop Line). After the war, many of them were converted to single-cab and intermediate cars, but the cars that remained with double cabs were used to add cars to trains in the metropolitan area, such as the Chuo and Sobu lines, and some were further transferred to local lines such as the Toyamako Line, Oito Line, Ube Line, and Onoda Line.
On the Ome Line, old national electric trains were used until 1978, but along with the 72 and 73 series, the KuMoha 40 series was in service until the end.
In the 1960s, the old national railways on the Ome Line mainly consisted of two-car formations of KuMoHa + KuHa, or two of these coupled together, but from around 1972, MoHa 72 and SaHa 78 were transferred, and since then, the main formation has been four-car formations of KuMoHa 73 + SaHa 78 + MoHa 72 + KuHa 79.
