Product Description
──[Thank you Nemuro Line Kiha 40] All four trains on the final day of operation on the Nemuro Line are now available in a special set!
[Actual vehicle guide]
The Kiha 40 series was a general-purpose diesel car developed to replace the aging Kiha 10 series and was introduced in 1977.
A variety of models and series were manufactured, including single-cab and double-cab locomotives for cold and warm climates, and with or without toilets. A total of 888 locomotives were operated mainly on non-electrified lines throughout the country.
In Hokkaido, where winters are severe, the Kiha 40 series 100s are used with double cabs, while the single cab Kiha 48 series 300s with toilets and 1300s without toilets are used, and the small side windows are double-glazed for extreme cold.
The Kiha 40 series 100s were converted to one-man operation and became the 700s, and their exteriors, which were previously only vermilion, were changed to a refreshing light gray with green and blue stripes.
The 700 series subsequently underwent life extension work, including engine renewal and relocation of the rooftop water tank indoors, and the construction vehicles were upgraded to the 1700 series, a larger number than the 1000 series.
Even after the Furano-Shintoku section of the Nemuro Main Line is closed in 2024, Kiha 40 series trains will continue to operate on the Takikawa side, delighting fans with their seasonal appearances along the line. However, with the timetable revision the following year, they will be replaced by Kiha 54 series 500 series trains, and on March 14th, the day before the timetable revision, they sadly put an end to their service on the Nemuro Main Line.
