The Kiha 40 series was a general-purpose diesel car developed to replace the aging Kiha 10 series and was introduced in 1977.
A variety of models and series were manufactured, including single-cab and double-cab locomotives for cold and warm climates, and with or without toilets. A total of 888 locomotives were operated mainly on non-electrified lines throughout the country.
Since around 1980, the Kiha 40 series has been deployed to the then Hakodate Depot and has been active on the Hakodate Main Line, Esashi Line, Matsumae Line, Setana Line, etc. Although its scope has been reduced due to the closure of lines and conversion to third-sector companies, it has supported transportation. With the timetable revision on March 15, 2025, the last remaining regular operation on the Hakodate Main Line between Hakodate and Oshamanbe will end.
The first outbound train on the final day of operation, 5881D from Hakodate to Mori, the only three-car train in the Hakodate area, was operated by three cars that had been in service in Hakodate for many years: No. 1806 in JR Hokkaido colors, No. 1801 with its characteristic irregular skirt, and No. 1809 [Dounankai no Megumi].
[South Hokkaido Sea Blessings] After the Kiha 40 series was no longer in operation in the Hakodate area, No. 1809 was transferred to Tomakomai Depot and is currently active on the Hidaka Main Line.

On the last day of regular operation, March 14, 2025, the three Kiha 40 series cars were assigned to the 5881D bound for Mori via Fujishiro and Shikabe from Hakodate, and were in active service throughout the day.
Kiha 40-1806 and 1809 models reproduce the skirt with a small inclination angle, which is a characteristic of later models.
The Kiha 40-1801 type has a newly produced skirt with a distinctive shape similar to the early model on the two end sides.
*Jumper hoses cannot be installed.
The H-rubber is black for the front driver's seat window and passenger seat window, and gray for the rest.
The front display is interchangeable and comes with two different types of printed parts [One Man] in different fonts.
The double-tiered windows are printed to recreate the wintertime lowered state.

Shoe rails and door rails are reproduced in silver (except for Kiha 40-1809 type).
Head and tail lights and front display are equipped with a constant lighting board and an ON-OFF switch
Headlights, taillights, and front display are illuminated by white LEDs
The headlights use color prisms to illuminate in a color similar to incandescent light.
