[Actual vehicle guide]
The ED79 series was introduced as a locomotive for use in the Seikan Tunnel, which opened in 1988. It was a modified version of the ED75-700 series that was adapted to handle the continuous gradients and increased speeds in the tunnel, and was also equipped with safety devices for the Seikan Tunnel.
In later years, the side inspection hatches were filled in, and in 2010 the pantographs on both ends were replaced with single-arm types.
The Hamanasu and Cassiopeia supported transport on the Tsugaru Kaikyo Line until their discontinuation in March 2016 following the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen, and all of the trains were retired.
