The Takanami class was an improved version of the Murasame class, but the structure of the hull and engine room remained unchanged from the Murasame class.
Although the displacement has increased by about 100 tons, this has had little effect on the ship's maneuverability and no changes have been made to the engine.
The armament was changed from two types of vertical missile launchers to one type, and the main gun was changed from a 76mm rapid-fire gun to a 127mm rapid-fire gun.
The changes to the main battery were in response to requests for increased anti-aircraft, anti-ground, and anti-surface fire power.
Takanami was laid down in 2000, followed by Oonami, Makinami, Sazanami and Suzunami, for a total of five ships.
Takanami was deployed to Yokosuka in 2003 and has been deployed to the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Somalia, and elsewhere for the protection of various ships and joint training exercises.
During the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force was dispatched to the area as the vanguard, carrying out rescue operations and providing food.
Currently, Yokosuka is the ship's home port.
