When Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power in Germany in 1933, a massive rearmament program began.
One of the first military trucks produced under this program was the Krupp Kfz.70 six-wheel drive light truck, designated the L2 H43 and known to soldiers as the Krupp-Protze.
Originally designed as an artillery tractor and general-purpose truck, various variants were later developed, including a telephone vehicle, command vehicle, communications vehicle, and ammunition carrier.
The Kfz.70 entered service in 1934 and was equipped with a 53 horsepower Krupp boxer engine, giving it a top speed of 70 km/h and a range of 450 km.
The vehicle weighed 3 tonnes and could carry a maximum load of 1,150 kg.
Later, the L2 H143 was built, fitted with a stronger 60 horsepower engine, but performance remained unchanged.
The Kfz.70 was first used in the Invasion of Poland in 1939 (the start of World War II), followed by the French campaign in 1940 and the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.
A small number of them also served in the North African Campaign from 1941 to 1943.
Due to its poor fuel economy and high manufacturing costs, only around 7,000 were produced between 1934 and 1941.
This general-purpose truck could transport a driver, assistant, and up to 10 soldiers.
It was also used to tow light anti-tank guns, light anti-aircraft guns, ammunition trailers, small generators, etc., but in that case the crew was limited to five people.
The Kfz.70 was a versatile vehicle, but special-purpose versions with modified body structures were also manufactured for specific missions, including the Kfz.21 command vehicle, Kfz.69 artillery tractor, and Kfz.81 2cm anti-aircraft gun tractor.
Although production ceased in early 1941, the Kfz.70 remained in service throughout World War II.
