Product Description

DDG-172 Shimakaze is a third-generation missile destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, completed in March 1988.
A distinctive feature of this class is that the Mk.13 missile launchers, which had been located at the rear of the previous class (Tachikaze), have been moved to the bow, and bulwarks have been installed to protect them from waves.
The aft deck can accommodate helicopters, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities have also been enhanced.
It served on the front lines until the Aegis destroyer Haguro was commissioned in March 2021, after which it was reclassified as a training ship (TV-3521).
It is currently part of the 1st Training Squadron at Kure Air Base and is still in operation as of January 2026.
