We are pleased to announce a new product from Planet Model, Special Hobby's resin kit brand: the 1/72 Curtiss-Wright Cw 24-B prototype canard aircraft.
In 1939, the United States Army Air Corps presented specifications for the R40C Orbital Plan, a development program for an interceptor fighter aircraft that would overcome the limitations of propeller-driven aircraft by meeting three conditions: low air resistance, good forward visibility, and powerful armament.
Of the eight aircraft manufacturers that submitted proposals, three companies, including Curtiss-Wright's XP-55 (internal development name Cw 24), won prototype contracts.
The aircraft featured a single pusher-type reciprocating engine positioned at the rear of the fuselage to drive a propeller, a canard positioned near the nose, and swept wings, giving it a unique shape. It was also the first Curtiss-Wright military aircraft to feature a tricycle landing gear.
However, the Army was not keen on adopting the aircraft, and initially only placed orders for ground test models and wind tunnel test models, stating that the order for a prototype would depend on the results of those tests.
Therefore, Curtiss-Wright built a full-scale flight test aircraft (internal designation Cw 24-B) at its own expense, and after conducting tests from December 1941, it was finally able to receive an order from the Army for three prototype aircraft, designated as the XP-55, in July 1942.
The kit includes resin parts (fuselage, wings, etc.), 3D printed parts, a vacuum-formed canopy, and one type of decal.
