Product Description

The Kurama was commissioned in 1981 as the second ship of the Shirane-class anti-submarine helicopter destroyers.
This was an enlarged and improved version of the previous Haruna model, but it debuted with a significantly enhanced information processing capability thanks to the introduction of a large-scale computer in the CIC (Combat Information Center).
Furthermore, it attracted attention for being equipped with Sea Sparrow short-range surface-to-air missiles and 20mm CIWS Phalanx for individual ship air defense and protection.
Later, the onboard helicopter was changed from the HSS-2B to the SH-60J, further improving its anti-submarine capabilities.
The Shirane-class destroyers were the largest until the Kongo-class appeared, and the Kurama served as a core member of the destroyer fleet for a long time. However, with the commissioning of DDH-184 Kaga in March 2017, its role came to an end, and it was sadly decommissioned that same month.
