The T28 heavy tank (T95 tank destroyer) was a prototype heavy tank designed in the United States during World War II that lacked a rotating turret.
The tank, whose development was decided in 1943 and which was given the designation T28 in 1944, possessed firepower capable of destroying German heavy tanks and tank destroyers deployed along the fortified lines built in Europe.
The T28, which lacked a rotating turret and featured a sealed, fixed fighting compartment, was renamed the T95 tank destroyer in 1945.
The two T28 (T95) locomotives that were manufactured underwent testing at the Aberdeen Proving Ground and Fort Knox until 1947.
The most distinctive feature of this vehicle is its double-row inner/outer running gear and tracks, designed to reduce ground pressure in order to support its combat weight of nearly 90 tons. The outer running gear, along with its side skirts, could be detached, allowing the vehicle to run without the outer running gear when transporting by rail or traveling on paved roads.
