The Musashi, the last battleship built by Japan, was laid down in March 1938 at the Nagasaki Shipyard as the second ship of the Yamato class.
The construction incorporated improvements based on the problems identified with the Yamato, and the flagship's facilities were further enhanced.
Like the Yamato, the Musashi was a top-secret national project, and because it was built in a private shipyard, meticulous measures were taken to conceal its contents.
Because the 46cm main guns could only be manufactured at the Kure Naval Arsenal in Hiroshima, the Navy went to great lengths to avoid transporting them on civilian ships for counterintelligence reasons, and instead built the Kashino, a transport ship specifically designed to carry the 46cm guns.
The Musashi, which entered service in August 1942, had a Type 21 radar for anti-aircraft surveillance mounted on its 15m rangefinder a month later, and in January 1943, it departed for the Truk Islands, a major strategic base for the Imperial Japanese Navy.
In February, it replaced the Yamato as the flagship of the Combined Fleet.
