The L6/40 was a light tank operated by the Italian Army during World War II, with the "L" indicating its light tank class (Leggero).
432 of these tanks were produced between 1941 and 1944, and they were mainly used as reconnaissance tanks in the deserts of North Africa and the plains of Russia, and in the latter half of the war in the Italian peninsula and the Balkans.
Dissatisfied with the performance of the L3 light tank, the military requested that the M6 medium tank be prototyped in 1939, based on the third prototype of the 5-ton light tank and equipped with a turret featuring two Breda M38 8mm machine guns.
Although the M6 medium tank only met some of the required specifications, it was decided that the L6/40 light tank would be developed on the condition that improvements, mainly in armament, would be made.
The L6/40 was initially classified as a medium tank during its prototype stage, but in 1940, the requirements for medium tanks were raised from [over 5 tons] to [over 8 tons], so it was reclassified as a light tank.
The production version of the L6/40 adopted the 1941 turret, which was equipped with a Breda M35 20mm autocannon and a Breda M38 8mm machine gun, both of which were also used in the AB 41 armored car.
The L6/40 was delivered to the military in 1941 and was mainly deployed to cavalry divisions on reconnaissance missions until production was discontinued in 1943. It was used not only by the Italian army but also by the German army in anti-partisan warfare, and vehicles that remained after Italy's surrender in 1943 were used until the early 1950s.
