[Actual vehicle introduction]
- In the history of electric locomotives in Japan, the presence of locomotives imported from foreign countries at the beginning was a major factor.
- Even after the domestic production of electric locomotives progressed, there were many locomotives that were used for a long time with electrical components replaced with domestic standard products, and even after being retired by Japanese National Railways, they were sold to private railways and used for further use. The locomotive that continued was also seen.
- Seibu E61 was originally JNR ED11 type 1, a D-class DC electric locomotive manufactured by GENERAL ELECTRIC in the United States in 1923.
- Initially, it had a 600V/1200V switching function and was tested on the Chuo Line, Yamanote Line, Keihin Line, etc., and then was modified to be 1500V and debuted for pulling trains on the Tokaido Line.
- In the 1930s, it moved to the Chuo Line and was active, and after the war it was used to pull short-distance freight trains on the Ito Line and Yokosuka Line, and was retired from JNR in 1960.
- Unit 1 was sold to Seibu Railway and renamed E61, and was used for a long time towing freight trains and engineering works, but in 1987, with the introduction of E31, its 64-year life came to an end, and it is currently used today. It is statically preserved at Yokose Vehicle Depot.
