[Actual vehicle introduction]
- After the war, the Ministry of Transport's Railway Bureau aimed to improve the efficiency of passenger trains on the Tokaido Line as a way to deal with rush hour traffic, and began converting long-distance trains to electric trains, an unprecedented move in the world.
- The 80 series was introduced in 1949 as the Shonan Train, combining passenger train bodies, customer service facilities, and modern braking equipment with electric trains, which had previously been used for urban and suburban transportation, and was painted orange and green as a warning color.

- Kumouni 81 is a mail and baggage train for the 80 series, six of which were manufactured in 1950.
- At the time, mail and baggage trains were run by converting aging passenger trains, so this was an unusual new build, and the exterior design, including the front shape and paintwork, was aligned with the 80 series trains (second generation).
- Around 1955, the 80 series trains on the Tokaido Line Tokyo side were operated in 10-car formations, with a maximum of 16 cars coupled with an additional 5-car formation and a KuMoUni 81, making them the longest electric trains in the world at the time.
- The Kumouni 81 underwent renovation work from 1961, which resulted in some exterior changes such as the front window being supported by H-rubber supports.
- From around 1962, it was deployed to Ogaki Electric Railway Depot and was seen in action on the Tokaido Main Line.

- Headlights and front train number display are in warm white, taillights are in red
