Product Description

The Hokoku Maru, along with its sister ships, the Aikoku Maru and the Gokoku Maru, were cargo-passenger ships built by Osaka Shosen for the South African route under the subsidy facility for the construction of excellent ships, with the assumption that they would be used for military purposes in the event of an emergency.
Completed in June 1940, the ship only made one voyage to South Africa, and mainly operated on the Dalian route.
In August of the following year, she was requisitioned by the Navy and converted into a purpose-built cruiser equipped with eight 15cm single guns and 53cm twin launch tubes.
After being commissioned, it was formed into the 24th Squadron together with the Aikoku Maru and engaged in commerce raiding operations in the Indian Ocean.
In November 1942, she was sunk off the Cocos Islands after being attacked by a Dutch armed tanker and its escorting Indian Navy minesweepers.
