Product Description

-- Commuter trains are moving to alternate-current sections! The 4-door, long-seat 501 series!

[Actual vehicle introduction]
The E501 series was introduced in 1995 with the aim of improving transportation on the Joban Line, which was becoming increasingly crowded.
North of the dead section between Toride and Fujishiro, direct trains running from the AC electrified section to Ueno Station were fitted with AC/DC commuter trains such as the three-door 415 series, with formations of up to 15 cars. Long-seat cars and prototypes of two-storey ordinary cars were also introduced to deal with rush hour traffic, but the decisive move was the introduction of four-door, long-seat commuter trains, which was said to be part of a grand plan that also anticipated the extension of Joban Line rapid trains and the replacement of the 103 series electric trains in the future.
The E501 series was born as the first ever AC/DC commuter train. It was based on the 209 series DC commuter train, which was being increasingly built at the time. As a result of being fitted with AC equipment and being able to operate at a maximum speed of 120km/h, changes were made such as thicker outer panels and a wider distance between the bogie centres. However, like the 209 series, the construction of each part of the car body differed depending on the manufacturer.
Initially, only one 10-car and one 5-car train were in service, but with the timetable revision in the spring of 1997, three more 10-car and three 5-car trains were added, and they were used between Ueno and Tsuchiura.
Even after the E531 series was introduced in 2005, it continued to be operated in parallel, but was withdrawn from the Ueno side with the timetable revision in the spring of 2007. Since then, it has continued to be used on the Joban Line and Mito Line north of Tomobe.
Of the 10-car formations, only K704, and of the 5-car formations, K751 and K754, are manufactured by Tokyu Car Corporation, and there are external differences compared to the vehicles manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, such as end panels without horizontal ribs, side window frames with small corner radii, and evenly spaced ribs on the roof.
