──An unusual addition to the Mammoth Brothers! Horizontal Filter No. 51!

[Actual vehicle introduction]
As electrification progressed, electric locomotives were becoming the main force in freight trains on the Tokaido Main Line. However, when the electrified section was extended to Maibara, JNR decided that a single conventional locomotive would not be capable enough to tow a 1,200-ton train over Sekigahara, and so they proceeded with the development of the EH10, which was based on the conventional EF15 and had eight driving axles.
The long car body, over 22m in length, does not have a leading bogie due to the effective length, and a structure consisting of two connected car bodies with four driving axles was adopted to take into account the ability to pass through curves.
The non-through box-shaped car body with crew doors on the side became the standard form for future JNR electric locomotives, and one pantograph was installed on each car.
With eight MT43 motors, it boasts a rated output of 2600kW, and its massive total weight of 116 tons and jet black body with a yellow stripe earned it the nickname "Mammoth" among fans.
After four prototypes appeared in 1954, 60 mass-produced trains were produced by 1957, with the pantograph position changed and various parts made lighter. A total of 64 trains were in service on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines east of Okayama.
Because they were not suitable for pulling high-speed container trains and it was difficult to couple them with other F-class locomotives, they were retired from the front lines with the introduction of their successors, the EF66s. Since it was also difficult to convert them to local lines, all of them were eventually retired by 1981.
