[Actual vehicle introduction]
The Meine 40 was the first new sleeping car manufactured after the war, with 21 cars completed in 1948. These cars were newly built to meet the demands of the occupying forces and were converted for general use. They featured both private (compartmental) and Pullman-style (open) sleeping berths, and were equipped with air conditioning, making them the most luxurious facilities available in the JNR at the time. However, they also featured rational design features, such as a steel roof with no tapered ends and two-axle bogies.
Initially, it had access platforms at both ends and debuted as a first-class sleeping car with a grape-colored No. 1 and cream No. 2 stripe. After the removal of access platforms on one side, its class being downgraded and its designation being changed, it continued to be used as a top-class vehicle on night express trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines and sleeper express trains to Kyushu until it was retired at the end of the 1960s.
This product recreates the appearance of the golden age of JNR conventional lines, with its grape-colored No. 2 body color, light green class stripe, and sleeping car markings, when it served as the core of overnight express trains alongside the 20-series sleeping cars after the abolition of the three-class system in the 1960s.
Perhaps because there was more room for vehicle operations, trains with multiple Marone 40s attached, such as the Tokaido Main Line overnight express trains Gekko and Myojo, appeared, and there are records of them performing brilliantly, befitting a luxury sleeping car.
