Fukuoka Prefecture is home to numerous coal mines, including those in Iizuka, Nogata, Tagawa, Omuta, and Arao, and large amounts of coal were extracted there from the Meiji period until after the war.
This coal was transported by rail to major ports such as Kanda and Kitakyushu, and then shipped to various parts of Japan.
These coal freight trains were operated using small two-axle freight cars with inverted trapezoidal hoppers, and long trains of 20 or 30 cars could be seen being pulled by steam locomotives such as the 9600 or D50.
The SEM 6000 is a 15-ton coal car manufactured from 1939 onwards as a quasi-wartime design that was lighter than conventional vehicles.
However, there were shortcomings in the strength of the underframe, and after the structurally reinforced SEM 8000 was produced, the Sera 1 was produced in 1957, with a load capacity increased to 17 tons.
At its peak, there were over 4,000 Sera 1 cars in service, including those converted from SEM 6000 and SEM 8000.
The Sef 1 is a vehicle based on the Sem 6000, with one-quarter of the body converted into a conductor's compartment.
Kyushu coal, which supported Japan's modern development, began to decline around the 1960s due to a decrease in mining volume, the influx of coal from overseas, and the shift to oil as an energy source.
All SEM 6000s were scrapped in 1979, all Sera 1s in 1986, and all SEF 1s in 1985.

Sera 1, Sef 1, and Sem 6000, which created an era of JNR coal cars, are now available as products without the yellow stripe as they were before October 1968.
A3004 is a set of 5 intermediate cars Sera1 and 1 conductor's van Sef1.
A3005 is an all-intermediate car. In addition to five Sera 1s, one low-height Sem 6000 is included.
*SEM 6000 is a [Type] model that reproduces only the markings using the mold of Hora 1.
Parts are pre-installed to recreate the state of a loaded coal car. These can also be removed to recreate the empty car.
A3004 and A3005 can be combined to reproduce any long train formation.
