After the post-war chaos settled down around 1950, momentum began to build for research into even faster railway vehicles.
Odakyu Electric Railway considered shortening the journey time between Shinjuku and Odawara to 60 minutes, but the conventional train structure was heavy and limited the speed it could achieve. In 1957, they introduced the Romancecar 3000 Series Super Express (commonly known as SE), a revolutionary lightweight train with a completely redesigned structure.
Developed in collaboration with the Japanese National Railways, the train incorporated a number of new technologies, including a shell structure incorporating aircraft technology that integrated the frame and car body, slimming down the wall thickness to the utmost by not considering downgrading and reviewing materials, and adopting an articulated car body to lower the center of gravity and reduce the number of bogies, while its service life was set at 10 years.
Combined with its bright paintwork, which was not available on previous trains, it not only improved the image of the Odakyu Romancecar, but also led to it being loaned to the Japanese National Railways in September 1957 for high-speed testing, achieving a speed record of 145 km/h on a narrow-gauge line between Kannami and Numazu.
The results of this test were later used in the development of the JNR 151 series and the Shinkansen.
The 3000 series SE was subsequently modified many times, including twice being fitted with air conditioning and being shortened to a five-car formation for direct use on the Gotemba Line, and remained in service for much longer than originally planned, until all of the cars were retired in 1992.
As of 2025, three cars are carefully preserved at the Romancecar Museum.

Based on A2151 (shipped in September 2006), this is the first production of the Odakyu 3000 series Romancecar in its original specifications.
Features of the actual train are reproduced, such as a short car body with rows of small windows, articulated bogies, and a pantograph elevated high on a low center of gravity car body.
Following on from the 2018 production A2154 SSE, this model features a power unit with a flywheel and bogies with improved detailing.
The two headlights lined up in the center of the front, and the vermilion and gray paint scheme that differed from later models, give the car a unique appearance at the time of its debut.
The nickname plate on the front is printed with "Hakone." You can also use the enclosed stickers to create a different nickname.
The hook shape of the vehicle connection has been improved to make it easier to connect.
