The Fletcher class destroyers are a class of destroyers of the United States Navy, with the Fletcher being the lead ship.
The ship was named after Admiral Frank F. Fletcher, who commanded the Veracruz landings in 1914 and was awarded the Medal of Honor.
After the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1942, the ship was assigned to the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet and was tasked with patrolling the Guadalcanal area.
The Fletcher participated in the Third Battle of the Solomon Islands in November of the same year, and fought bravely in the chaos of the battle, while both Japanese and American ships were sunk or damaged one after another. As a result, it was fortunate to be the only U.S. Navy ship that participated in the first night battle to survive unscathed.
During the subsequent Battle of Lunga, she rescued survivors of sunken allied ships.
After 1943, she continued to perform a variety of missions, including landing support and night bombardment, and was overhauled on the West Coast in 1945 before the end of the war.
After the war, in 1949, the ship's type was changed to DDE-445, and in 1950 it participated in the Korean War. When the Vietnam War broke out, it was deployed to the Western Pacific and carried out numerous missions.
Fletcher received 15 battle stars for World War II service, five for Korean War service, and seven for Vietnam War service.
