The EF81 is a dual-voltage electric locomotive developed in 1968 that can operate on both AC and DC power.
The EF81 locomotives at the Aomori Rail Yard were active in pulling the sleeper express trains "Akebono" and "Hakutsuru," but after the discontinuation of "Hakutsuru," in 2003, locomotives 136 and 139 were modified to be equipped with double-headed couplers for use in transporting electric trains to factories and other purposes.
Until 2009, it pulled the "Akebono" train all the way from Ueno to Aomori, but from 2009 onwards, the section between Ueno and Nagaoka was changed to be pulled by the EF64 locomotive, and it operated only between Nagaoka and Aomori.
