Product Description
--Enjoy comfortable seats and airport access! Salo 113!
[Vehicle Introduction]
The 113 series is a DC suburban train that debuted in 1963 as an upgraded version of the 111 series, which appeared in 1962.
Strictly speaking, only the electric cars existed; the leading cars and trailer cars were manufactured as the 111 series, with variations in specifications and structure, totaling 2,943 units by 1982. For many years, they were seen operating mainly on flat lines within DC electrified sections throughout Japan.
Because only 64 units of the 111 series motor cars were produced before production ceased, it is common practice to refer to all trains other than the 111 series motor cars in the narrow sense as the 113 series in the broader sense.
The Green Cars of the 111 and 113 series were based on the Salo 110, which was repurposed from the express-type 153 series, and the Salo 111, which was originally a newly built car for the 111 series. Following the Salo 112, which was a modified version of the Salo 152 and Salo 163, 17 Salo 113 cars were manufactured from 1973 for Narita Airport access.
Because it was intended for airport users, it boasted luxurious amenities such as a wide seat pitch for a suburban train and reclining seats comparable to those in express train green cars. However, due to the postponement of the airport's opening, it was repurposed for temporary trains and the Yokosuka Line.
However, its limited seating capacity proved unpopular, and from 1976 it was reassigned to the Kansai region, and its paint scheme was changed to the Shonan color.
Later, in 1980, with the start of through service between the Sobu and Yokosuka Lines, it was recalled to the Kanto region once again, and operated in the Yokosuka Line livery until its retirement.
Salo 113-1011 is well-known among fans for its incorporation as a Green Car in the Makuhari Train Depot's 117 formation, which was composed entirely of 1500-series cars, starting around 1982. It continued to operate in essentially the same formation until its retirement in 1998.
