The Great Northern War (1700-1721) was a conflict between Sweden and the countries that formed the Anti-Swedish Alliance (Northern League) over Swedish hegemony, and it became a turning point in early modern Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe.
When the war ended with Sweden's defeat, it lost its status as a major power, and Russia, having acquired the Baltic region, became the strongest power in Northern and Eastern Europe.
