The 800 series is a train that JR Kyushu manufactured and introduced in conjunction with the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen. It debuted in March 2004 with the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen line between Shin-Yatsushiro and Kagoshima-Chuo, inheriting the nickname "Tsubame," which had previously been used for limited express trains on conventional lines.
The car features a striking design with a white body accented with gold and the corporate color red, creating a sense of speed, and incorporating a swallow mark and logo.
With the opening of the Hakata-Shin-Yatsushiro section in March 2011, which marked the full opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen line, the train cars were also used for the newly established express "Sakura" service. As a result, the car body markings were revamped and the logo was changed to one themed "AROUND THE KYUSHU."
