The Series 35-4000, which debuted in 2017, began operation as a replacement for the SL Yamaguchi train, which had been using Series 12 passenger cars.
Despite being a newly manufactured vehicle incorporating the latest technology, its appearance is exactly like the old passenger cars that were in service during the heyday of steam locomotives. It has become popular as a very unique vehicle that combines a retro look with a comfortable interior.
Various locomotives used for the SL Yamaguchi train, including the 2024-1 C57 1, 7008-C DD51 1043 (Shimonoseki General Rolling Stock Depot), and 3061-6 EF65 1000 (Shimonoseki General Rolling Stock Depot), are also scheduled for simultaneous re-release.
In addition to regular weekend runs by steam locomotives such as the D51 200 and C57 1, it is also possible to recreate test runs and transfer scenes using DD51 and EF65 locomotives.

The train's design replicates that of older passenger cars, featuring observation decks at both ends, dummy ventilators, and a double roof, while also incorporating modern equipment such as rooftop air conditioners, underfloor generators, and bolsterless bogies, resulting in a unique and distinctive appearance.
The different shapes of the air conditioner covers on cars 1-3 and cars 4-5 are reproduced.
The eye-catching observation deck, tail mark, taillights, and interior atmosphere are accurately reproduced.
The double-roof skylight windows on car No. 5 (SuhaTe 35) are represented by separate parts. In addition, the dummy garland ventilators installed on cars No. 1 to 4 are also accurately reproduced.
The louvered shutters on the side windows, which are used regularly, are reproduced as separate parts (cars 2 and 3).
The interiors of the standard and Green Cars, reminiscent of old-style passenger cars, have been faithfully reproduced. The event space in car number 3 has also been accurately recreated.
