── Small windows are the feature of the Hokkaido-type Kiha 56! A new group with flat front windows has been produced!

- The Kiha 56 series is a Japanese National Railways express diesel car equipped for use in extremely cold regions of Hokkaido.
- The Kiha 27 type of the Kiha 56 series was equipped with one engine and had one water inlet at the bottom of the side of the car body.

[Actual vehicle guide]
- The Kiha 56 series was an express diesel car introduced by Japanese National Railways in Hokkaido in 1961 as a substitute for the Kiha 58 series for extremely cold regions.
- The basic structure is the same as the Kiha 58 series, but the side windows are 100mm narrower in height than the Kiha 58 series, with a double-glazed structure that has glass windows on the inside as well, and the floorboards are made of wood to provide heat retention and anti-slip properties, making it suitable for use in extremely cold regions.
- The green car KiRo 26 type had a significantly different appearance, with one small window per row of seats, compared to the large drop-down window with a bar in the middle that spans two rows of seats used in KiRo 28 trains for trains outside Hokkaido.
- The 0 series was characterized by the lack of small round windows under the passenger doors and inspection hatches under the crew windows, which differed from the 100 series that appeared later, except in later modifications.
- The express train [Karukatsu] served as an express train connecting Sapporo and Kushiro via Furano, and some trains departed from Asahikawa and ran as local trains on the Furano Line from Nemuro.
- When the Sekisho Line opened in 1981 and the main transportation route between Sapporo and Kushiro was transferred there, the train became a local express train and the number of trains decreased. However, until 1985, when green cars were abolished from diesel express trains within Hokkaido, the train retained the appearance of an express train coupled with KiRo 26 type locomotives, and is still called a rapid train today.
